Life Before Life

Many people who have gone through near death experiences (NDEs) come back feeling like their heavenly encounter means that they incarnated from Heaven and will return There after physical death (e.g., Dr. Eben Alexander's account in the book Proof of Heaven).  That may or may not be true.  Just because we have an afterlife does not mean that there is a life before life.  A few fortunate souls can be exposed to Heaven while they

are alive through NDEs or astral projection but these experiences do not mean that all people come from Heaven before birth.

Even accepting that the NDE proves that Heaven literally exists, does Its existence mean that we incarnated from Heaven?  Why would the soul incarnate in a body given its freedom and splendor in Heaven?  Why would we ever leave Heaven to incarnate in a world where the innocent are killed in wars fought by different religious and ethnic groups?  Or where famine kills millions every year despite the existence of technology and knowledge to feed the globe?  Why would we choose to incarnate where we are constrained by the body's needs?  Life before life does not make sense.

Of course, what we mean by the term "Heaven" is relevant to this discussion.  Even accepting that the soul existed before birth, it is not clear that it had a Heavenly existence before birth.  Heaven is a place for the best of humanity to congregate, learn from each other, and work for the betterment of religion and humankind.  It is full of archangels, angels, visionaries, saints, prophets, ministers, and religion teachers who actively engage to spread peace and goodwill on earth.  These activities are animate, engaging, and conscious.  By one theory, most souls in Heaven got there after their earthly existence.  In contrast, any life before life is momentary at most.
